REVELIO Project - DEVELOPMENT OF THE REVELIO DATA COLLECTION PLATFORM

THE PROBLEM In Italy, an average of 595.3 grams of food is wasted per person per week. Among the reasons cited by respondents in the Wastewater survey, it is evident that 47% of people do not remember the food they have available at home (and especially in the refrigerator), which therefore is not consumed before its expiration date and spoils. On the one hand, the waste of this enormous quantity of food is considered immoral; on the other, it has economic impacts on household finances. According to studies in the REDUCE Project report, the economic value of household waste in Italy exceeds 15 billion euros per year; of this, 11 billion euros are attributable to food waste. Added to this is waste throughout the supply chain, both in production and distribution (over 3 billion euros). Today, there are several apps that aim to engage individuals and families in gamified activities to reduce the environmental impact of everyday actions. This approach, however, requires a significant commitment from consumers, making these solutions effective only for particularly proactive users who are already committed to being more responsible when it comes to food waste. To date, there are no widely adopted solutions on the market that aim to make people aware of the food available in their refrigerator or pantry and the risk of it going to waste, in a way that encourages more sustainable behaviors. THE SOLUTION The REVELIO project aims to bring to market a solution capable of overcoming the limitations of existing solutions, thereby helping to reduce food waste and promote informed choices regarding dietary habits and food consumption. The project’s ambition is to develop a flexible, low-cost solution accessible to everyone, to make people aware of the state of food in their homes, thereby encouraging responsible behaviors for a healthier lifestyle and food consumption that is both healthy and sustainable. The strength of this solution lies in its dual capability: it can be integrated into household appliances while also functioning as a standalone system, making it suitable for the B2C market. Compared to the current market, REVELIO introduces a solution capable of helping users reduce food waste and increase their awareness without requiring them to manually enter information about what is available in the pantry or refrigerator—and specifically what has been placed in a particular food container. The data collected will be objective and factual, based on the actual condition of the food. Technologies

REVELIO relies on a combination of various types of sensors that collect specific data. This data is used to develop machine learning algorithms that enable the recognition of food categories and the assessment of their condition. This combination of technologies allows REVELIO to identify the food in different containers and inform the user about both the nutritional content and the actual condition of the food. Impacts

Benefits for the Company The REVELIO project represents a significant boost to ROLD’s competitiveness and can drive the company’s growth by enabling it to: 1) Expand its reach within the home appliance market. In fact, ROLD will be able to offer its customers—who are major appliance manufacturers—an innovative solution that goes beyond the limitations of current market offerings, allowing them to monitor food consumption and gather useful information to optimize preservation processes. REVELIO will enable ROLD to enter the food preservation market segment, which remains largely unexplored. 2) Addressing growing consumer demand for more sustainable practices and reducing food waste. By focusing directly on consumer needs, ROLD will be able to strengthen existing partnerships in the B2B market and enter the B2C market. 3) To position itself in the market as a strategic partner capable of devising innovative solutions that meet environmental and social sustainability requirements. ROLD has always been regarded as a partner capable of developing innovative solutions. Thanks to REVELIO, ROLD will have the opportunity to strengthen its brand reputation and increase the number and scope of partnerships with leading appliance manufacturers. Through data collection, ROLD’s customers will be able to improve the performance of their products/appliances in terms of food preservation. 4) Successfully entering the B2C market. Thanks to REVELIO, ROLD will be able to enter the B2C market by creating a standalone smart product that consumers can use to increase their awareness of the condition of stored food and reduce their environmental impact.
